

Tirzah is reluctant to take sole ownership of the music made in her name. The title track from “I’m Not Dancing” hinted at an offbeat perspective: “I’m not dancing, I’m fighting / I’m not shining, I’m burning / I’m not touching, I’m feeling.” Tirzah and Levi’s earliest releases together revealed a shared interest in wonky sound: the EPs-“I’m Not Dancing,” from 2013, and “No Romance,” from 2014-featured gnarled dance music that grasped for resolution. Their work as a composer can range from eerie to stately, but there is always an underlying incongruity. Under the name Micachu, they produce soundscapes ranging from jangling experimental pop to alien electronic music. Since the late two-thousands, Levi-who uses they/them pronouns-has existed along pop’s outer edges. She found institutional study suffocating, but it was there that she met Levi and began a two-decade-long association.
